TRIVIA AND OBSERVATIONS
SUPERMAN THE MOVIE- Brando’s Jor-El costume used by a stuntman for the destruction of Krypton sequences. These scenes were filmed on the then under construction Fortress of Solitude set on H Stage at Pinewood Studios in late April 1977.
SUPERMAN THE MOVIE- A promotional still of Gene Hackman from the film THE CONVERSATION appears on Lex Luthor’s piano.
SUPERMAN THE MOVIE- A bag from the still in operation (in Ohio) Arthur Treacher’s Fish & Chips American fast food restaurant appears on the Lex Luthor’s lair set, filmed on D Stage at Pinewood Studios in England.
The chain’s namesake is Arthur Treacher (1894–1975), an English character actor typecast as “the perfect butler” for his performances as Jeeves, as a butler in several Shirley Temple films, and the role of Constable Jones in Walt Disney Productions’ Mary Poppins. At the time the chain was founded, Treacher was best known as the announcer and sidekick on the popular The Merv Griffin Show. Treacher refused in interviews to confirm whether he had a financial involvement in the restaurants.
SUPERMAN THE MOVIE- A bag from the still in operation ZABARS grocery store in New York City appears on the Daily Planet set, filmed on E Stage at Pinewood Studios in England.
A SUPERSTAR IS BORN-
In 1976 A STAR IS BORN became the first Dolby Stereo film.
SUPERMAN THE MOVIE was the first film to feature a split-channel surround soundtrack (originally a 6-channel presentation).
Dolby Digital sound made its debut in BATMAN RETURNS.
Both A STAR IS BORN and BATMAN RETURNS were produced by Jon Peters, who also produced SUPERMAN RETURNS.
All of these films are from Warner Bros.
In A STAR IS BORN Streisand wears a white t-shirt with the Superman \S/ on it (bottom photo of 2nd pic).
The following year (1977) Streisand released a song and album entitled “Superman”, in which she wore the same style t-shirt for the cover and promotional photos (top row photos of 2nd pic).
Streisand was also considered for the role of Lois Lane early on, but it was thought a star of her caliber would not accept a multi motion picture contract, so the idea was quickly scrapped.
Streisand shares the same birthdate (April 24) as SUPERMAN THE MOVIE director Richard Donner, this date also happens to be when Margot Kidder screen-tested for the role of Lois Lane in 1977, a role Streisand was considered for.
SUPERMAN II- Mirrors were used to extend the DAILY PLANET set for the new Richard Lester sequences and the Richard Donner scenes reshoots.
SUPERMAN II- The official DAILY PLANET magazine has “THE PRESIDENT” (E.G. Marshall) named E. Harold Woodbar.
SUPERMAN II- The diner sequence was filmed during the day, so black out curtains were draped over the diner trailer area.
The background seen outside the diner doors as Clark and Lois walk in is a projected image.
The obvious trivia about this scene is the Director Richard Donner cameo at the beginning of the sequence, but if you look to the right side of the shot you might spot the prison wall from the Luthor sequences, they can also be seen outside the diner windows in various shots.
If you deleted a few choice letters from the DON’S DINER name you get DONNER.
Although filmed by Richard Donner, both diner sequences were musically scored by Richard Lester era composer Ken Thorne.
SUPERMAN II and SUPERMAN III- What do these SUPERMAN II and SUPERMAN III scenes have in common?
Both were the first filmed by Director Richard Lester for their respective theatrical releases.
The SUPERMAN II Houston Control scene was filmed on August 29, 1979, and the SUPERMAN III scene on June 21, 1982, both at Pinewood Studios.
Look at the photo below. The license plate on the limousine in the 1976 version of A STAR IS BORN has same numbers and letters as the one hanging in Linda’s and Lucy’s dorm room in SUPERGIRL, they’re also both California plates.
